I have been going to Big Burger Spot on Battleground for about 2 years now. This is the original location that is next door (attached to) a gas station/convenience store. I must have drove past this place a couple of dozen times and never stopped it. Gas station location - Not appealing. Tacky sign - did not encourage me to go in. This is the type of place that many would not venture into just based on the outside appearance. What's the saying...you can not judge a book by its cover!
Then one day I decided to give it a try as there always seemed to be lots of cars outside, so it must be good right?
When I finally did decide to try them, I was glad I did. The place is tiny and it had a line going out the door. It was winter and people were willing to wait in the cold for a chance to get lunch here. Good sign.
You order your food through a half door and the order is passed to the cooks to be freshly made. The overall theme of the menu is very similar to the now nationally famous Hops Burger Bar in Greensboro. I don't know who was first Hops or Big Burger Spot, but the concept in the food/menu is pretty similar, good burgers with interesting varieties and an extensive french fry menu. The main difference is the Hops has alcohol and Big Burger spot does not. Hops also has a lot more ambiance....
Big Burger spot has their burgers sized at Almost Big and Big (and Colossal for those with a real big appetite) I always go for the Almost big and a side of fries or onion rings and there is no way I can eat it all. The sides of fries and onion rings are appropriate for sharing. Every time I go I see something on the menu I want to try as there are lots of interesting items. hummus, Chili, soups, Burgers, sandwiches and a large French Fry menu.
Big Burger Spot's Food
Today I had the Backyard BBQ Burger which has American Cheese, BBQ Sauce, Applewood smoked bacon, and crispy onions. Big Burger Spots food is always served to you fresh off the grill and today was no exception.
For a side, I had the onion rings with a side of Big Burger Spots Dipping Sauce. The onion rings were freshly fried and crisp. They are the small thin shoestring style onion rings that are never soggy or tough. Great rings!
The ambiance at the original location gets a zero rating as it is located next to a c-store and gas station. It is clean, but it is a dive. This is a VERY popular lunch spot and it can get crowded and for good reason. The food is fantastic. However if you are looking to take someone out on a first date to impress them, well, this might not be the spot. Big Burger Spots new location off of 40 is significantly nicer but it is still a fast food joint. I kind of like the original location better for some odd reason. The tacky signs and being a dive with great food creates a unique dining experience.
The Battle Ground Location also has a unique outdoor eating area. Dog / pet-friendly. I can imagine someone taking their dog, but not their cat, but you never know. The outdoor area is mostly shaded by trees and there are a few tables with umbrellas, but it is the mulch floor and the decor that is most interesting. Dog friendly with a dog menu.
I have never seen any dogs here, but it is listed on www.bringfido.com
Big Burger Spot is a fun restaurant with great burgers.
