$18-$25 meal for 2 plus drinks
Freeman's Grub & Pub is a definite cheap eats winner. Good creative food at great prices. Freemans's is a basic pub with a more sophisticated and creative twist on pub foods. The most expensive thing on the menu was $12. Most items are around $10. They do not have a website, only a facebook page with limited information on the restaurant.
Freeman's is located on Spring Garden in the Brice Street area about 2 miles from Downtown. There are lots of restaurants and bars in this section of town. Parking is very limited in this area. On a busy night, you might have to hunt a bit for a spot to park. Tonight, we were able to park right next to Freeman's as the area was very slow for some reason. Freemans is a very small restaurant with a bar on one side and about 8-10 tables on the other. The decor is interesting, as everything is mismatched with an industrial / reclaimed / Antique appearance. There are only 2 bar stools that are the same. The bench seating area had repurposed buttons of all types. Combine this with the vintage Edison light bulbs and you have a funky pub with a hint of a dive bar, that is comfortable and pleasant.
Being a pub, they have a great beer list in bottles and on tap. They also have a good selection of infused cocktails.
The wait staff at Freemans were extremely friendly and helpful. It is refreshing to see a great wait staff in a restaurant in this price range.
Food at Freeman's Grub and Pub
The menu at Freeman's is definite pub style, but it has pushed the creativity up while keeping the prices reasonable. It is a small menu, but more than adequate. There are a handful of items in each category of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrees. More than enough to peak your interest. Every item had a twist to it to make it an original dish.
Tonight we had the Fried Smoked Chicken Drumsticks. This was a fantastic combination. Lightly smoked chicken that was deep fried resulting in a combination of fried notes with a slightly smoked meat coming through. This was served with their raspberry BBQ sauce. Very tasty.
Next, I had the Smoked Beef Brisket Sandwich. This was served with Bacon, Pimento cheese, Raspberry BBQ, lettuce, and Tomato. I choose the Jalapeno cumin fries for a side. The combination of flavors worked on the sandwich. I would have preferred a bit more Raspberry BBQ, but I had kept the container from the Chicken and was able to bump this up a bit. There was plenty of pimento cheese to create a Smokey, cheesy , fruity sandwich. The Jalapeno Cumin Fries had the right level of Jalapeno. Enough to get a bit of heat and flavor but not overpowering.
We also had Freeman's Pub & Grubs Brisket. Same smoked brisket as on the sandwich, but a lot more of it. Nicely smoked, incredibly tender. Perfectly cooked.
Typically, I rarely order dessert, but Freeman's Pub and Grub had chocolate covered bacon on the menu for about $2. How could I resist!
It is a single piece of bacon covered in dark chocolate. It was pretty good. I would have preferred a bacon with more salt and smoke to play off the sweet chocolate. Could have used a bit more presentation, but it was only $2.
Overall, Freeman's Pub and Grub is a great deal. Great creative pub food at VERY affordable prices. Go and try them, I think you will be very happy with the food and the drinks.
