Chef Dion Sprenkle Restaurant is located in the old small quiet town of Welcome, North Carolina. The mailing address is Lexington, but they are in the middle of Welcome on Old RT 52. This is somewhat of an odd location for a more upscale restaurant with a very creative Italian-inspired menu. It is located in a dry county, but you can bring your own wine and beer. It is also located well outside of a metro area in a small town well outside of Winston-Salem. The area has plenty of wineries that maybe a draw for foodies, but I would expect a restaurant serving this style of food to be more in a metro area.
Chef Dion's Restaurant
Chef Dion Sprenkle's restaurant stands out from the other very small restaurants in the area. Most of the local restaurants around Chef Dion's are an old run down diners and sub shops. Chef Dion's is located in what looks like an old BBQ or other fast food restaurant that has been partially converted. The interior is a bit dated with old tables and chairs and it has some new artwork that brightens things up a bit. It is far from meeting the decor standards of an upscale restaurant in downtown Winston-Salem, but it is far above the standards of the local restaurants in Welcome and Lexington.
Chef Dion's Service
This was our second dinner at Chef Dion's. The service on our first night as average to slightly above average for a mid range restaurant. Tonight was a let down with rather poor service. While we are still reading our menus a very young server brought a bowl to our table and asked us "who was getting the mussels?" It obviously was not us as were just seated and everyone had their noses in the menu. After this our server was no where to be found. After 15 minutes, we had to get up to ask where our server was.
Chef Dion Sprenkle's Food
The food is why you come to Chef Dion Sprenkle. Chef Dion was trained at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America. America's top Chef's come from this school. Chef Dion's restaurant serves Italian inspired food that is very creative and different than you typical Italian restaurant. It is refreshing to see an Italian menu with original or lesser seen dishes. There are lots of interesting dishes to choose from.
Tonight I had the Jumbo Shrimp Pasta. Jumbo shrimp, tomatoes, pepper flake, white wine, basil, garlic, olive oil over linguini. The flavors of the sauce was fantastic. Wine sauce with lots of garlic, basil and a touch of red pepper. This is not a red sauce but a wine sauce with a few whole cherry tomatoes for accent. Excellent dish. What was a major let down was the side of bread that came with the dish. It was dry, crumbly and somewhat stale. It had the texture of a lean bread that was under mixed and baked much earlier in the day. It was stuffed with cheese and if this was properly mixed and baked fresh, it could have been fantastic.
Others at our table had flat breads that they felt were delicious. On our previous all of the food was very good. If you are in Davidson County or well south of Winston-Salem, Chef Dion Sprenkle is worth visiting. For us, it is a bit of a long trip...
