We have been visiting Palenque on a regular basis for quite a few years. It is our standby, easy to get to Mexican Restaurant that has a HUGE menu and some really good dishes. The Margaritas are also very good.
It is located in a small strip center next to the food Lion in Kernersville. Over the past 7 years, they have slowly improved the interior by adding to the decor. It is a heavily used restaurant and there is typically a wait to get it. This can have a heavy toll on the interior. Palenque has done a pretty good job at keeping things up and looking good. Right now the tables are a bit worn, but everything else is in good shape.
Palenque is quite popular with large groups in K'Vegas. This can be the one downside as people expect the obnoxious birthday greeting in Mexican Restaurants. It would be nice if they just cut this out as it does not add much for the rest of the diners.....
I have several favorites here. One dish you do not see often that is served here are the Cordoniz (deep fried cornish game hens) topped with either a garlic sauce Codorniz Frita Mojo de Ajo or a hot sauce Codorniz a la Diabla. This is a great dish. One of my favorites here. On some nights, it can be a little dried out, though. Another great dish is the Fajitas Carnitas. Same basic Fajitas but with Carnitas (Roasted pork that has been lightly fried)
Tonight I had the Bisteca a la Mexicana. This was a steak served like fajitas except the steak is whole. This was a fantastic dish. The blend of the marinated steak over the carmelized onions and peppers served on the sizzle platter was fantastic. Another dish to add to my list of favorites here.
The service here is always great. Management has done a great job with the staff and it is reflected in the service. My only gripe is the front area is a zoo. Large numbers of people coming in waiting for a table and large numbers of people trying to pay their bill at the register. It would be nice if they would update their POS system to allow the waiters to process the credit cards and get rid of the registers up front. North Carolina is the only place in the world that still has diners pay up front at a register. This knocks down the restaurant in many aspects. Gives it a cheap appearance.
